The Import Export Code (IEC) is a 10-digit code issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) that is required for all import and export transactions in India. It is linked to the business' PAN and is a lifetime registration with no annual filing requirement — but it must be updated annually on the DGFT portal (even if there are no changes) to remain active. Is an IEC required for service exports?
No IEC is required if a service exporter does not receive payment in foreign currency or does not require customs clearance. However, for most service exporters receiving foreign currency, an IEC and FIRC (Foreign Inward Remittance Certificate) management is recommended.
Is the IEC a one-time registration?
Yes, the IEC is a lifetime registration tied to the PAN. However, it must be updated annually on the DGFT portal (even if nothing has changed) to remain active.
Can a proprietor get an IEC?
Yes. Sole proprietors, companies, LLPs, partnership firms and trusts can all obtain an IEC.
What if my IEC lapses due to non-update?
A lapsed IEC can be reactivated by completing the annual update on the DGFT portal. SS Marks provides an annual update service to prevent lapses.
