BIS Certification / ISI Mark in India

BIS certification (ISI mark) is mandatory for over 370 product categories in India — including electronics, toys, steel, cement and IT products. Selling without it is a legal Complaints violation. SS Marks manages the complete BIS application.

Frequently asked questions

Which products require mandatory BIS certification?

Contact us to know the exact pricing for your requirement. The list is updated regularly by BIS.

What is the difference between ISI mark and CRS?

ISI mark is the certification mark for BIS-certified products under the Mandatory Certification Scheme (MCS). CRS (Compulsory Registration Scheme) covers electronics and IT products — certified products carry a registration number rather than the ISI mark.

Can a foreign manufacturer sell in India without BIS certification?

No. Foreign manufacturers of products under mandatory schemes must obtain a Foreign Manufacturer Certification Scheme (FMCS) licence from BIS before their products can be imported and sold in India.

How long is a BIS licence valid?

Contact us to know the exact pricing for your requirement. Surveillance visits by BIS inspectors occur during the licence period.

How long does BIS certification take?

BIS certification typically takes 3–9 months from application, depending on the product category, factory inspection scheduling and lab testing lead times.
